Recently projected numbers suggest that online spending in the United Kingdom will increase by
10 percent this Christmas compared with the same period for December 2007.
The results of Deloitte's recent report reveals that Internet users who shop online are planning
to spend more this year compared with traditional 'physical store' shoppers. It also suggests that
there has been an increase in the numbers of people who shop online.
Deloitte said that consumers who do most of their shopping on eCommerce sites are expecting to
spend an average of £773 this Christmas, compared with £655 for the total population.
It will be interesting to see how these predictions materialize as far as the U.K. is concerned.
They also point out that the number of eTailers offering ecommerce sites has increased to 81
percent from 71 percent in 2007, and grew by 51 percent in 2006.
Deloitte expects the trend to continue, despite the turmoil in global financial markets in the past
two to three months.
For the current holiday season, a little over $10.4 billion has been spent online so far, marking a
4 percent decrease when compared with the corresponding days of 2007, while Black Friday saw $534
million in online spending, up only 1 percent.
For the combination of Thanksgiving Day and Black Friday, eCommerce sales were up about two percent
relative to Dec. 2007.
U.S. online research firm comScore released actual performance results from the U.S. Thanksgiving
shopping weekend which were fairly flat.
Nevertheless, it would appear that eCommerce sales are still growing despite the current shaky
economic conditions. The actual level of the growth rate will be interesting to see when the full set
of seasonal results start coming in around Jan. 15, 2009.
