According to eBit, for this year, it is expected that Brazilian online consumers will spend about
BRL 8.5 billion (US $5.9 billion). The numbers focus only on B2C (Business-to-Consuner) and not
on B2B sales (Business-to-Business).
Like so many other key Internet metrics in that country, the eCommerce industry in Brazil is
maturing rather fast, when compared to less than 8 years ago.
Overall, Brazil's growth in online spending is directly related to its rapidly growing population
of Internet buyers, who are among the most-active retail eTailer users in the world.
Between 2001 and last year, eCommerce revenues as reported in eBit's Web Shoppers research
increased more than 310 percent.
As a whole, and according to the people surveyed, the convenience of shopping online far
outweighs security concerns for many Internet users in Brazil. About 61.4 percent of Latin American
consumers surveyed four months ago by América Economía and Visa said they thought it was fairly
safe to make some purchases on the Internet.
On average, of the consumers in Latin America who think purchasing online is secure, a little over 54.9
percent of respondents in Brazil said they thought online buying was secure.
However, Brazil's consumers were slightly less likely than their neighbors to feel safe about
retail eCommerce, the study showed.
It will be interesting to compare these numbers six months down the road, and after online
sales numbers are published for the 2008 Holiday season in Brazil.
